Here's an interesting little car that deserves to be put back on the road. She's a 1949 MG YT, a Model Y Tourer from 1949. She does have a very interesting Island history and we are keen that she goes to a good home where she'll be loved and cossetted to emerge into the sunshine to drive the old roads that she used to drive over 70 years ago.
Have a read of the rambling advert and the website has lots of photographs taken by a heathen, with some of them repeats, but if you're bored and at a computer, you can flick through the photos at your leisure. Better still, give Adam a ring, or pop down to see the little car during business hours.
Only 877 of the Model Y Tourer's were built in Abingdon and in approximately 1983, a well known car officiando, Mr Jim Walters (come on Jim, come visit your old car) bought the car from the estate of Mr Harry Craig. Mr Craig bought the car new from Bristol Motors in 1950, and put the car into storage in the Shawnigan Lake area in 1968 until his passing. From what we understand, the MG lived her later years in Sooke where we came into posession of her (big thank you, Wanita). We have some period news paper cuttings that help tell the story.
Our Tourer is YT 3342. Body Type is B282. Body Number is 45138/477
The Model YT was produced from early 1947 until late 1953, and we're guessing she's quite rare with only 877 being produced. Approximate weight is 935 KG and she produces about 54 BHP at 5200 RPM. It has the 1250cc XPAG engine with a twin SU carburettor, four speed manual transmission, hydraullic brakes, independent front suspension designed by Alec Issigonis and a very unique jacking system. We believe one of the reasons for the low production was that it competed against itself with the MG T Series sports cars, echoes of what would happen with British Leyland several decades later. By 1984, there were rumoured to be less than 1000 left in existence, so what that number is in 2022 we can only hazzard a guess at. The estimate for the amount of YT's left in the UK as of 1984 was....wait for it...12. Quite advanced for the time, engineering wise, the little YT could propel you to 50 MPH in 16.7 seconds, topping out at 70 MPH.
We are told that the engine is not original to the car, and may be a B Series, and NOT a 1250cc XPAG.
The dashboard is lovely, with echoes of the T Series and those Jaeger dials.
These's little MG's are quite the car, and were considered sporting in the post war world.
She runs very nicely, thanks to Brian and Doug and their tune up skills, but she needs a fuel pump. Most of the bits are here with the car, including the rear fender, the seats, door cards, windscreen etc. We have information relating to her history, plus manuals relating to her mechanical upkeep.
We haven't put a price, as it's so difficult to value a car like this, so we are open to offers, swaps or ideas. What is important is that she receives some love. She's such a good looking little car.
We welcome input and corrections regarding the MGYT and you can chat to us via our Facebook page which is easy to find.
